The highest bitumen road in Australia is a great place for incredibly scenic road cycling sessions in summer, particularly for those competitive riders wishing to engage in altitude training. The climb (or descent) from Harrietville covers 38km of winding road and forms part of the annual Hotham Challenge Ride Weekend. A simple ride between Dinner Plain and Hotham is a great way to escape the everyday amongst the high country snowgums. Explore "the back tracks" at Hotham and Dinner Plain with undulating ridgeline rides, amazing views and coasting downhill runs through snowgum forests, creek crossings, jumps and bush tracks. Mountain biking is not permitted on the downhill ski runs at Hotham, however there are numerous fire trails and 4WD tracks that wind through the bush, so there"s plenty of places to explore on your bike.
Hotham hosts a number of areas of environmental significance for flora and fauna within the resort. Pick up a wildflower guide book at the Resort Management Board Office (or Transit Lounge on weekends) and spot different species along the way. Hotham is home to a number of threatened species such as the Mountain Pygmy-Possum, Alpine She-Oak Skink and Alpine Bog Skink plus endangered flora such as the Mountain Daisy, Dwarf Sedge and Rock Tussock-Grass.
